NATIONAL FINAL OF CREDIT
UNION SCHOOLS QUIZ
We are justifiably proud of our school U-13 & U-11 quiz teams who took
part in the National Credit Union finals at the R.D.S. in Dublin on Sunday
April 10th. This is our third year in a row to get to the National
Finals. Getting to the R.D.S. is a huge achievement and both teams did us proud
on the day. Our U-11 team were Seán Finnegan, Jack Buckley, Fionn Murphy and
Anna Cashman and did very well in their category.
The U-13 team were Paraic Finnegan, Ciara O’Keeffe, Dara Moriarty and
Maggie Buckley and came second after a tie-breaker. For those of us who
were present at the RDS it was a nail-biting experience as our team members
played like tigers right up to the end scoring ten out of a possible twelve
points in the last two rounds thereby catching up with the leaders in the dying
moments of the competition. Unfortunately the tiebreaker did not go our way but
won the honour of being runners up for the second year in a row. This is indeed
a wonderful achievement and congratulations to all involved.
Each member of the U13 team were presented with a Tablet, Ear phones
and a plaque, The school holds on to the cup for the runners up for another
year,. The school also received a seven hundred and fifty euro prize which has
been lodged to the school account and will be spent for the benefit of the
school.
We congratulate both teams and thank their mentor Ms. Anne Marie
Murphy for preparing them so well. The school wishes to acknowledge with
gratitude the generous support the Credit Union has given us for this event.
SCÓR QUIZ
On Sunday 17th
April, four boys from sixth class
travelled to the ISK in Killorglin to represent Rathmore GAA club in the County
final of Scór na bPáistí. They won the competition doing both their school and
club proud. The team members were Paraic Finnegan, Andrew Moynihan, William
Casey and Dara Moriarty.
CYCLING CLUB
In April the
Sliabh Luachra cycling club presented the school with a five hundred euro
cheque. We would like to thank the club most sincerely for their generosity.
The money has been lodged to the school account and will be put to good use.
BORD GÁIS ENERGY STUDENT THEATRE
AWARDS
This year 2,888 entries were received from 349 primary and secondary
schools across Ireland and it was a huge achievement for our school to reach
the final. We were nominated in two
categories – Ms. O’Donoghue was nominated for best direction and Sean Burke
O’Donoghue for best male actor in a leading role. Congratulations to Sean on getting the
award. It was a marvellous achievement
and heartiest congratulations from all at Holy Family N.S. for receiving such a
wonderful accolade. A big thank you to
Áine O’Donoghue and last year’s 6th class pupils for their wonderful
production with the help of Helen Dillane and Anne Marie Murphy. You can still view this on the school blog.
The children from last year’s sixth class were invited to attend the
awards but unfortunately it clashed with an all-Ireland Basketball final for
First years and some of the girls were unable to attend. However a wonderful day was had by all. We visited Glasnevin Cemetery and had
a guided tour, visiting the grave of O’Donovan Rossa and heard P. H. Pearse’s oration at his funeral
being enacted by an actor. We visited
the graves of Michael Collins, Eamon deValera, Daniel O’Connell and many
others. Then we crossed the road to St. Paul’s Cemetery where we saw the
monument on which Patrick O’Connor’s name is inscribed. We would like to thank Mr. Denis Kerins of
Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and their secretaries Lorraine and Marian for
helping us to organise the event. More
pictures of this event are available on the blog.
SUPER SEVENS BASKETBALL
This year two boys teams and one girls team
represented Holy Family N.S. in The Super Sevens Basketball competition which
took place in the Presentation gym in Killarney. The girls team played really well.
They were beaten by just one point in the Plate Final. Well done girls and congratulations to Lily
O’Brien on being named on this year’s Girls All Stars Basketball Team. The girls panel is Maggie Buckley, Caoimhe
Dineen, Muireann Hughes. Cathy Kiely, Megan Kiely, Norma Leader, Aoife Nagle
and Elizabeth O’Brien.
The boys panel for Team 2 were John Hughes, Fionn
Murphy, Darragh Nagle, Michael Togher, Padraig Moynihan, Cian Healy
Mangan, Shane Daly, Ciarán Collins and
Jack Buckley. Team two performed very
well but were defeated at semi-final stage and did not qualify for the
finals. We look forward to a wonderful
future from this young team in years to come.
Team one had a strong panel of Michael Dennehy,
Dara Moriarty, Andrew Moynihan , William Casey, Cian Twomey, Sean Finnegan,
Paraic Finegan, Daniel Moynihan and Dennis Mahoney. Team one did extremely well qualifying for the
semi final of the Cup. This means that they finished as one of the top four
teams in this year’s competition. In the semi – final they were beaten by a
very strong Nohoval Team who won out this years competition. Congratulations to Paraic Finnegan who was
named on this year’s All Stars Boys Basketball Team. Well
Done boys.
We would like to thank Helen Dillane, Miriam
Moynihan and Jamieson Hughes for looking after our Basketball teams.

SEVEN A SIDE BOYS AND
GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAMS
Our Boys football team recorded some excellent results at the East Kerry

ensured top spot in our group. A quarter final win over Loretto NS pitted Holy
Family NS against Knockanes NS in the semi-final. This proved a very entertaining encounter with
Knockanes claiming victory in a final scoreline of 4-04 to 3-03. Great credit due to all the players.

ACTIVE SCHOOLS FLAG
Active Schools Week took place in
the school from the 25th-29th April. A huge range of
physical activities were undertaken including Tug of War, Limbo, Athletics,
Dodgeball Tournament (students vs teachers) and an Active Sports Quiz. Talks
were provided by Donie Kelleher of the local cycling club and Tae Kwon Do
instructors, Master Bobby Enright (Peak Performance Personal Training) and
Jerry Reen which were very interesting and beneficial for all students. Garda
John Crowley gave a talk on Road Safety to all classes. The Parents Association also organised a very
successful athletics event for all classes. We would like to thank all parents
who organised this event as well as all parents who attended events and
supported Active Schools Week. We would also like to thank the organisations
who gave talks to the students as well as the teachers, students and Active
Schools Committee for their enthusiastic participation during the week. Before
AS Week, Jamieson Hughes provided us with a very interesting talk on his
training for Triathlons and Iron Man events. We thank Jamieson for giving us an
insight into the importance of activity and healthy eating in our lives.
Following AS Week we had a wonderful talk by an athlete from Kerry Stars
Martina McCarthy and her coach Tom Joe O’ Donoghue. After the talk second class
took part in a demonstration session where they participated in activities
undertaken by Kerry Stars during their training sessions. They greatly enjoyed
this session. Thanks to Martina, Tom Joe and Joan O’ Connor (Kerry Stars coach)
who helped to organise the session.
Last
week we had a visit from the Active Schools assessor. Following this very successful visit we hope
to hear whether we have achieved the flag in the next few weeks.
