Holy Family N.S is a large rural mixed primary school with 222 pupils, 123 boys and 99 girls. We are delighted to be taking part in the Discover Primary Science Award for the fourth time since the opening of the school in 2007.
We received the Plague of Excellence Award in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
All the children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class have been engaging in science experiments over the last few months.
We have completed experiments in the strands: Living things, Energy & Forces, Materials, Environmental Awareness & Care.
The children from 3rd to 6th also enjoyed a visit form LearnIt LEGO workshop. The children thoroughly enjoyed problem solving, working in teams to create some wonderful pieces of engineering.
We had a wonderful day of showcasing all the fabulous experiments being completed by classes throughout the year by holding a showcase day. The children from 3rd to 6th displayed a wonderful array of experiments and PowerPoint presentations to all the classes in the school.
The children also engaged in Maths Problem Solving. Each class from Juniors to Sixth solved one Maths Problem a day for a few weeks. The teachers used the resources NZmaths and Topmarks to source the problem. Each day the winners of each class received a cert and their pictures were uploaded to the blog and displayed on a school notice board for everyone to see,
It was great that a different child won the Maths Problem each day.
We were delighted when mechanical engineer Mr Paul Darmody of Sapphire Engineering came in to present a talk to 4th, 5th & 6th classes about enhineering over the years. This was a very enjoyable experience for all the children.

Guest Speaker Invited To School
We were extremely fortunate to have Mr Paul Darmody of Sapphire Engineering come to visit us today and give a presentation to 4th, 5th & 6th class about engineering. Mr Darmody discussed the different aspects of engineering, where engineering originated from, some of the oldest engineering products to the newest and most well known products. Mr Darmody's presentation was extremely insightful and interesting and the children thoroughly enjoyed the talk...some of the students are certainly aspiring engineers with their wonderful ideas.
Thanks again Mr Darmody.
Please see below his wonderful presentation.
