Healthy Eating Policy

Introductory Statement

This policy was formulated after consultation with teachers, pupils and parents of Holy Family National School.

A committee of 2 parents, 2 children, 2 teachers and a dietician worked together since December 2008. This committee surveyed the children and parents to seek their views and suggestions, researched healthy eating options and produced Holy Family Healthy Eating Guide.

We focused on this policy to support parents and pupils around developing healthy eating habits at an early age. This policy is linked to:
  • SPHE: Taking care of myself and my body: Food and nutrition and making choices.
  • Science: Myself: Human Life Processes.

Mission Statement

To promote life long education of healthy eating, for mind and body.

Objectives/Aims

  • To help children improve concentration, learning and energy levels.
  • To support parents and children make healthy enjoyable decisions around food.
  • To develop nutritional awareness ie. ingredients in foods.
  • To support the school’s environmental policy-reusable containers, minimise wrappers…

Guidelines

  • A healthy lunchbox includes a piece of food from the first four shelves of the food pyramid.
  • Cans and glasses are not permitted for safety and litter reasons. Healthier choices of drink include water, milk and unsweetened juice.
  • Some of the healthy snacks that we encourage for the small break include crackers, fruit and cheese.
  • Foods which have wrappers are to be kept to a minimum and disposed of properly to reduce litter and protect our school environment.
  • All classes will receive a minimum of two lessons on healthy eating.
  • An application has been made for ‘Food Dudes Programme’.
  • School staff will provide positive modelling and supportive attitudes to encourage healthy eating.
  • A practical guide to healthy eating will be provided for everyone.
  • Crisps, fizzy drinks, sweets, chewing gum are not allowed in the school.
  • Chocolate and bars are discouraged.
