Guest Speaker Invited To School

We were extremely fortunate to have Mr Paul Darmody of Sapphire Engineering come to visit us today and give a presentation to 4th, 5th & 6th class about engineering. Mr Darmody discussed the different aspects of engineering, where engineering originated from, some of the oldest engineering products to the newest and most well known products. Mr Darmody's presentation was extremely insightful and interesting and the children thoroughly enjoyed the talk...some of the students are certainly aspiring engineers with their wonderful ideas.
Thanks again Mr Darmody.

Please see below his wonderful presentation.

FRIENDSHIP WEEK

Friendship week is a week of friendship activities from 8th to 12th April 2019.  This year’s theme for Friendship Week is ‘Welcoming Communities’.  Friendship Week is Amnesty International Ireland’s annual human rights education and fundraising event, developed specifically for primary schools.

Every class will be doing a variety of activities during the week and it also ties in with our Green Flag theme ‘Global Citizenship’.

NO UNIFORM DAY
On Friday 12th April we will have a no uniform day for pupils to raise some funds for ‘Féile’.  Féile is an annual tournament comprising the sports of hurling and camogie.  Rathmore GAA will be hosting the event and a number of our children will have the opportunity to participate in the competition.  Children can bring in a donation on the day.  (Remember also that we are closing at 12 noon on Friday for Easter holidays.)

PARENTS COMMITTEE – CLOTHES COLLECTION
The Parents Committee in conjuction with Lenrec have organised a Clothing Collection on Thursday May 2nd.  Please drop off your unwanted clothes and textiles to the school.  Over the Easter holidays you may have an opportunity to do a ‘Spring Clean’ and clear-out those wardrobes, drawers, cupboards of unwanted clothes.  Items suitable for the collection are:  *Men’s clothing   *Women’s Clothing     *Children’s Clothing *Household Textiles i.e. Curtains, Towels       *Shoes           *Handbags              *Belts.
Items – Not suitable are:*Dirty or wet clothing   * Mats  *Carpets  *Duvets/Pillows  *Books  *Laptops or Mobile Phones.
So Parents get chatting to families, friends and neighbours and bring those bags in.  The clothing collection will take place on the week we return after the Easter holidays – Thursday May 2nd.
This is a fundraiser for the Parents Committee and will help towards subsidising Swimming Lessons.

SWIMMING LESSONS (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Classes)
Swimming is part of the school curriculum. We have organised swimming lessons for the boys and girls from second to sixth class for six days commencing Thurs. May 9th,  and continuing on May 16th, 23rd, 30th  and June 6th & 13th.  The children will be taken by bus to Glen Eagle Hotel Aquilla Club, Killarney.  The cost of the lessons and transport will be €35 per child.  This year, also, the transport will be subsidised by the Parents Committee.  To keep the cost at the same price as last year, our Parents Committee are giving €1000 towards the cost. (Otherwise it would cost €45 per child.)  A big thank you to the Parents Committee for their fund-raising efforts and making this possible.  We will  set up the epayment method for swimming and you can pay directly into our bank account or children can start bringing in the money when it is convenient.
Please ensure that children bring swim gear, caps and a towel on these days. No need for shampoo.  If your child has goggles he / she can bring them also. There are a number of hair dryers in the changing rooms, time does not allow for the complete drying of long hair.  It might be an idea if girls with long hair would try and prevent their hair from getting totally wet by wearing waterproof head gear that you might deem suitable. Some people find that a rubber swim hat is very useful for this purpose.    Even if your child has no previous experience of swimming, it is really important that they take this opportunity to learn skills that may save their life someday.

We would like to give you notice also of the cost of the school tours.
On Fri. 17th May 3rd to 6th classes will travel to Star Outdoors in Kenmare.  The cost is €37 per pupil.
